The Samsung Galaxy S22 series is expected to launch in the near future, and it’ll sport a new ultra-durable material from Gorilla Glass. That’s according to notorious leaker Ice Universe, who previously claimed the full S22 lineup will feature glass backs. Whereas the Galaxy S21 series features a plastic back that looks like glass, the S22 will reportedly be made with an ultra-durable Gorilla Glass material.

Taking durability to the next level

In July 2020, Gorilla Glass announced a new type of ultra-durable material called Victus. Victus is a glass specifically designed for smartphones and other consumer devices. It protects the device from drops, bumps, scratches, and any other damage that may occur during daily use. Victus’ Gorilla Glass 6 product has a scratch resistance up to twice that of the Gorilla Glass 6, according to the company.

According to a tweet from Ice Universe, the Galaxy S22 series, including S22+ and S22 Ultra, will feature Gorilla Glass “Victus+,” though it’s unclear whether that term refers to an upgraded version of the Victus material. Gorilla Glass has not, at this time, announced a product called Victus+, though it’s possible it may make a joint announcement alongside Samsung’s S22 reveal.

If the tweet refers to the next-generation Victus material then Samsung’s new flagship phones will get an upgrade from plastic backs to glass backs. It would also have an amazing level of durability. Even better, the leaks suggest this major glass upgrade will be available across the entire Galaxy S22 series, not just the Ultra model.

This is great news for those who don’t like the idea of having to wrap their expensive smartphones in bulky, unappetizing cases. It is always risky to go case-free, especially considering Samsung’s curved edges. Also, replacing a damaged display on these phones is often expensive. It seems that those who are willing to take the risk will be able to benefit from Gorilla Glass Victus (or an updated version), which, in its current form, is resistant to drops on hard surfaces up to 6.5ft.
